Luna decembrie este prima lună calendaristică de iarnă, este luna cadourilor, luna primei zăpezi, luna în care sărbătorim Ziua Națională, Moș Nicolae, Crăciun și Revelionul. Este ultima luna din an, luna meselor îmbelșugate în familie, luna colindelor și urărilor de bine, luna în care se fac planuri și se pun dorințe.
Denumirea populară a lunii decembrie este Undrea, dar și Luna lui Cojoc, Ningău sau Luna lui Andrei. Sunt și ziceri populare despre luna decembrie: „În Undrea, iarna-i grea” sau „Undrea geros aduce an mănos”. Se spune că această lună fiind geroasă, gerul înţeapă de parcă-ţi înfige ace, undrele, andrele în piele. Din timpuri străvechi, vecine cu superstiţia, se mai spune că de va fi Crăciun ploios, va fi Paşte friguros sau cum va fi vremea la începutul lui decembrie, tot aşa va fi timp de zece săptămâni.
