Întrebarea următoare este cand se taie via. Tăierea de rodire se execută în perioada de repaus fiziologic al plantei, așadar de la căderea frunzelor toamna, până la dezmuguritul din primăvară. 

Dacă tăierea se face iarna, este recomandat să se lase o încărcătură pe rod mai mare, urmând să fie corectată în primăvară în funcție de pierderile de muguri provocate de temperaturile din timpul iernii.

În ceea ce privește altoirea vitei de vie, trebuie spus că este cea mai practicată metodă de înmulțire vegetativă. Ea presupune tăierea unei porțiuni de lăstar de la o plantă și transplantarea ei pe o altă plantă, prin metode specifice.
