Recunosc, cu părere de rău că n-am moștenit niciun cufăr de la niciuna dintre bunicile mele. Sunt pur și simplu îndrăgostită de cufărul bunicii. Mi se pare un obiect de suflet. Dar, într-un final tot o să-mi cumpăr unul de la vreun târg de obiecte tradiționale.
La români, mobila pictată făcea cândva parte din zestrea oricărei fete respectabile și, mai mult, era simbol al statutului familiei sale. Cu cât piesele de mobilier date drept zestre erau mai numeroase și mai bogat împodobite, cu atât familia era mai înstărită.

Demult, dinainte de vremea bunicilor noștri, cufărul se folosea pentru a depozita hainele sau obiectele de preț, reprezentând totodată un simbol al prosperității și un purtător al tradiției. Treptat, nevoia de simboluri a fost înlocuită de nevoia de funcțional. Cufărul a dispărut încet încet din casele oamenilor și au apărut alte piese de mobilier: dulapul, șifonierul.
Cu trecerea anilor, din cauza garderobei din ce în ce mai sofisticate, s-a născut nevoia unor soluții de depozitate mai complicate, care necesită soluții de uși glisante, spatii generoase și design modern.
Cufărul reprezintă piesa de mobilier caracteristică stilului gotic, stilul specific secolelor XIII - XV, inventat în Ile de France. În secolul XVII au pătruns în Europa cuferele lăcuite chinezești și nipone. Cu toate că erau foarte scumpe,au cunoscut o incredibilă popularitate în rândul celor înstăriți de multe ori interioarele fiind modificate pentru ase adapta noii piese.
