Gura leului este floarea zodiei Racului și a copiilor. Aceasta mai numește gâtul leului sau catelandru. Gura leului crește în sudul Europei, mai ales în regiunile Mării Mediterane. Există 42 de specii care diferă între ele mai ales prin nuanțele de culori ale florilor.În evul mediu, florile de gura leului erau apreciate mai ales pentru proprietățile lor supranaturale. Erau considerate ca o pavăză împotriva descântecelor și blestemelor. În zilele noastre, sunt cultivate pentru forma ciudată a florilor, care cu puțină imaginație ne amintește de un bot de leu sau de dragon. Horticultorii au creat zeci de soiuri rezistente și spectaculoase chiar și un soi de gura leului curgătoare.

Conform zodiei (de Apa), planta aceasta este o mare iubitoare de umiditate. În mod deosebit vara, când înflorește, mai ales dacă se întâmplă să fie foarte cald, trebuie udata din belșug. Gura Leului este o plantă care se dezvoltă bine la temperaturi joase, însă înflorește la temperaturi ridicate, în spații luminoase cu pământ bogat, bine afânat. Planta nu înflorește însă acolo unde temperaturile sunt foarte ridicate pentru perioade lungi de timp. În condiții de mediu favorabile, această plantă se răspândește singură în grădină.

Înfloritul începe în timpul verii (iunie-iulie) și ține până toamna târziu. Semănatul se poate face și direct în grădină, la sfârșitul lunii aprilie, însă plantele respective vor înflori mai târziu. Pentru a se obține plante frumos înflorite, locul ales trebuie să fie însorit și bine îngrășat. Dacă timpul este secetos, se face udatul la intervale de 2-3 zile. Gura leului se înmulțeste obișnuit prin semințe. Semănatul se face primăvara (martie-aprilie), în răsadnite sau în lădițe.

Florile și frunzele plantei se folosesc în scop terapeutic, conțin diverse elemente active: mucilagi, pectina, rășină, acid galic, rinantină și substanțe amare. Au proprietăți antiinflamatorii, astringente, emoliente, diuretice, antiscorbutice, analgezice de aceea sunt folosite în cazuri de faringită, inflamații sau ulcerații la nivelul cavității bucale, hemoroizi, arsuri la stomac, eruptii și arsuri cutanate și afecțiuni ale ficatului. Planta se folosește atât pentru uz intern cât și extern, sub formă de cataplasme, infuzie, tincturi, decoct.
